A Perfect Location Between Rochester MN and La Crosse WI

I still remember Jane and Max’s session like it was yesterday—it was truly magical! We were searching for a location conveniently situated between La Crosse, WI and Rochester, MN and Whitewater State Park was the perfect choice, being just a 40-minute drive from Rochester Minnesota and only 30 minutes from La Crosse, Wisconsin.

After selecting our perfect location, it was time to decide on timing. We had initially planned for those dreamy golden hour shots, but with all the lush greenery and tall trees throughout the park, we only caught small glimpses of direct sunlight. But honestly? The photos turned out so incredibly perfect that I wouldn’t change a thing. They seriously looked like they belonged in a travel magazine!

Getting to know Jane and Max was such a joy, and the love between them was evident in every single shot. They initially didn’t want an engagement session but later changed their minds, and I am so glad they did! After meeting them for their session, we were both so excited for their wedding a couple of months later. Their ceremony was so beautiful and romantic that I found myself tearing up multiple times throughout the day.

Pro Tips for Your Whitewater State Park, MN Engagement Photos

If you’re thinking about having your engagement photos taken at Whitewater, I’ve got some insider tips to help make your session absolutely perfect:

• Time of Day, while golden hour is always gorgeous, the dense tree canopy at Whitewater means you’ll want to plan for patches of light and shade. Late afternoon sessions work beautifully as the light filters through the trees creating the most magical atmosphere.
• Be ready for a bit of adventure! Some of the best photo spots require light hiking, so comfortable shoes are a must. If you’re up for it, these slightly more challenging spots often yield the most spectacular and unique photos.
• Definitely wear long pants if going off-trail—I learned about stinging nettles the hard way! Layered clothing works well for spring sessions as temperatures can fluctuate. And ladies, consider bringing a second pair of shoes if you want to wear heels in some shots but need something comfortable for walking.
• Don’t forget to grab a state park parking pass before you arrive. The park is open from 8 AM to 10 PM, but I recommend scheduling your session at least 3 hours before sunset to maximize our shooting time. • I always recommend bringing some bug spray, especially during late spring sessions when the mosquitoes can get a bit enthusiastic about their job.
