If you’re planning an engagement shoot or looking to capture sweet family moments, Rochester, MN has some truly beautiful photo spots that bring your session to life.

As a wedding photographer based right here in Rochester, MN, I’ve spent the last few years discovering some of the most beautiful locations to capture love stories. When I first moved here, I had to do a lot of location scouting to help my couples find the perfect spots for their sessions. It was important to me to offer places that felt beautiful, meaningful, and true to their story.

I wanted to combine all my favorites into one list, for my amazing clients and for anyone who might be wondering the same thing: Where are the best places to take engagement photos around Rochester?

Whether you’re working with me or just exploring options, I hope this guide saves you time and helps you find the perfect backdrop for your love story. These are the spots I’ve personally fallen in love with as a wedding photographer, and I can’t wait for you to fall in love with them too.

1. Plummer House: Timeless Rochester Elegance

Do you like beautiful stone buildings with exposed brick and some historic charm? Then Plummer House is perfect for you! This is probably one of my favorite locations to shoot engagement sessions in Rochester because the elegant, beautiful building fits perfectly with my style. Plummer House is a Tudor-style construction with beautiful stonework, sloped roofs, arched doors, a veranda, a stone wall perfect for sitting – basically a photographer’s dream.

Fall is perfect if you want to include some of the awe-inspiring colors that we get in Minnesota autumn. Spring and Summer highlight the amazing greens that really complement the style and colors of Plummer House. And of course, winter is tricky in our lovely but freezing Rochester, but if you are lucky to get fresh snow right before a session, this is Plummer House at its most beautiful.

The best part? You can explore the grounds for free! But since it’s also a popular wedding venue, I always call ahead before scheduling an engagement session. Trust me, nothing kills the romantic vibe like accidentally photobombing someone else’s wedding! The plummer is ran by the Rochester mn Parks and Recs department so you can call them or go to their website to ensure no events is going on. https://www.rochestermn.gov/departments/parks-and-recreation/parks-trails-recreation-facilities/plummer-house#ad-image-5

2. Downtown Rochester MN: Urban Engagement Photography with Endless Variety

When couples tell me they want modern, city-inspired engagement photos, downtown Rochester is my immediate recommendation! I’m obsessed with shooting here because we can capture SO many different looks without driving anywhere.

Your Rochester engagement gallery will feature everything from the sleek, contemporary Mayo Clinic buildings to charming historic storefronts and character-filled alleyways. Some of my favorite downtown spots include Peace Plaza, the courthouse with its gorgeous architecture, those iconic copper doors, and even some rooftop locations that give us the perfect urban backdrop for engagement portraits.

Pro tip: Downtown engagement sessions are perfect year-round and give us flexibility during Minnesota’s unpredictable weather since we can duck inside some locations if needed!

3. Silver Lake Park Rochester: Where Nature Meets Urban Beauty

I’ve captured some of my all-time favorite engagement photos at Silver Lake Park! This hidden gem is perfect for couples wanting natural Rochester engagement photos with occasional peeks of our city skyline in the background.

The lake creates these dreamy reflections that add amazing dimension to your engagement pictures, while the tree-lined paths create natural framing that photographers dream about. The historic Silver Lake Bridge is my go-to spot for romantic poses—I once had a couple practice their first dance here at sunset, and I’m still not over how magical those photos turned out!

And let’s not forget our resident Canadian geese who occasionally make the cutest cameo appearances when they’re feeling cooperative!

Pro tip from someone who’s made this mistake: Check the Rochester festival calendar before booking your Silver Lake session, as it gets pretty crowded during summer events!

4. Quarry Hill Nature Center: Intimate Garden Engagement Photos

Located on Rochester’s east side, Quarry Hill Nature Center offers that perfect intimate, natural setting with beautifully maintained landscaping. The area surrounding the Nature Center building is absolutely gorgeous for engagement photography, featuring a serene pond that creates stunning reflections, carefully tended gardens, and those romantic weeping willow trees that look amazing in photos year-round.

Navigation tip: If you’re using Apple Maps like I do, the directions sometimes take you to different (incorrect) areas of Quarry Hill. Save yourself the confusion and place a pin specifically on the parking lot near the Nature Center building!

5. Quarry Hill Park: Expansive Natural Landscapes for Epic Engagement Photos

Here’s where things get confusing for many Rochester locals! Quarry Hill Park is actually separate from the Nature Center (about 5 minutes away), and they offer completely different vibes for engagement photos.

While the Nature Center gives you those manicured garden settings, Quarry Hill Park provides wide-open spaces with rolling hills, prairie grasses, and more rugged terrain—perfect for showcasing Minnesota’s natural beauty in your engagement pictures. I’ve captured some of my most breathtaking, wide-landscape shots here with couples looking tiny against the vast natural backdrop—these always end up being the photos that get framed huge on living room walls!

Best time: Late summer when the tall grasses take on that golden glow is absolutely magical for engagement photography here.

6. Chester Woods Park: Dramatic Water Views.

As a photographer, I’m always scouting locations that offer a mix of natural beauty, charm, and variety the this location just 15 minutes east of Rochester, MN, Chester Woods Park is totally worth the short drive for engagement, Maternity or family photos! Centered around a stunning 118-acre reservoir, this location gives us those expansive water views that are hard to find elsewhere in our area.

7. Oxbow Park: Rustic Wilderness Charm for Adventurous Couples

Just 15 minutes northwest of Rochester, Oxbow Park holds a special place in my heart for engagement photography. The dramatic bend in the Zumbro River (that’s the “oxbow”) creates this peaceful, secluded setting surrounded by towering trees that frame couples perfectly.

This is my go-to recommendation for adventurous couples who don’t mind a little walking to find those perfect, secluded spots. The less manicured, more wild feel of Oxbow creates engagement images that feel authentic and untamed—just like your love story!

8. Whitewater State Park: Minnesota Engagement Photos Worth the Drive

Okay, I might be stretching the definition of “near Rochester” with this one, but I couldn’t leave out the fantastic Whitewater State Park located about 40 minutes east of Rochester. The Whitewater River is surrounded by dramatic rocky bluffs characteristic of the southern Minnesota-Wisconsin border region. Add in the lush forests, beautiful meadows, and occasional arched bridges, and you’ve got a dream destination for couples willing to venture a bit further for truly spectacular engagement photos.

I’ve hiked these trails countless times both professionally and personally, and those elevated paths provide breathtaking overlooks perfect for epic, sweeping engagement portraits. One of my favorite engagement sessions ever was captured here during summer—the photos looked like they belonged in a travel magazine!

Important warnings:

9. Rochester Art Center: Indoor Engagement Photography for Winter Months

When Minnesota winter gets too brutal (we all know how that goes!), the Rochester Art Center offers a stunning indoor option with beautiful staircases, modern art installations, and gorgeous natural light streaming through large windows—perfect for contemporary engagement portraits.

Important note: This location requires a fee (usually around $50-75) and advance reservation, so let your photographer know ahead of time if you want this option so they can help with arrangements.
